Ash trees are in imminent danger from this burrowing pest. Officials estimate that the state of Minnesota will lose up to 3,000 trees due to this infestation. The little buggers are really hard to detect too. A recent study investigated ways to detect the emerald ash borer. One of the methods involved taking back samples of the trees and peeling back the bark to find the pests. In many of the samples researchers found larvae of the ash borer. This seems to be the best way to detect the infestation early on. Outward signs are scarce until the damage has already been done.
Researchers have also developed a treatment for the trees, which they have been giving to all the trees located in cities around the infestation. Citizens are advised to keep from transporting wood across state and city borders, watch out for infested trees, and pay attention to quarantines. They hope to stop the spread of this infestation through these preventative measures as well as the treatment being given to trees that have escaped infestation thus far.
